Whoa you know 5 languages? What University did you go to?

I took philosophy at Cardiff Uni for my BA abd PGDip. I did sociology and social policy for a year, but I transferred out. I’m taking Philosophy at the University of Bristol right now for my MA.

But if you want to learn a language, you really don’t need an expensive education. You just need books, Skype (or someone to talk to), free time once or twice a week, patience, and a lot of determination.

I was raised in Wales so I had to learn Welsh and one modern language up to age 16, so I chose French. I learned British Sign Language at night classes when I was 17. I’ve been teaching myself Japanese for 4 years, and now I’m going to an evening class once a week. I think it’s great that we’re forced to speak 3 languages in Wales, I really do. It gives you a better understanding of how language works and how to express yourself well. Most English people don’t seem to have a very good handle on grammar or syntax. It’s sad because it’s their own language. They should take more pride in it!

how can you be against privilege but for hating England because of their history? No one in England asked to come from a nation of colonial pricks. Feel free to pick this apart and use big philosophical words that someone in a lecture hall taught you would make you more impressive but this is all the debate you're getting out of me. WHAT GOOD IS IT THEN? OOOOOH. lalala i'm university educated my opinion matters more than yours look at my degree it gives me value as a person.

“how can you be against privilege but for hating England because of their history?”

Sorry anon, I literally don’t understand your question. ’But for’ as in ‘except for’? It makes no sense.

I don’t hate England. I just think that it’s extremely ignorant to assume that a person is English just because they’re white and living in the UK. Just like you wouldn’t assume that every black person is African or every East Asian is Chinese.

By the way, the person I had that conversation/debate with is at the same university as me. And she used proper English too. Does that mean you disagree with her as well?

And my university degree didn’t teach me “big philosophical words”. The dictionary did. It didn’t teach me any of the five languages I speak, either.

I don’t understand how people my age can enjoy snow. Its cold, wet, makes you ill, makes you fall over and is just an inconvenience. Sure if you’re younger and don’t have to work and can go sledging go for it because yeah it was great when I was a kid but Jesus it’s just…

Send her to Brynmawr for 24 hours. She’ll shit a fucking brick.

I'm tempted to make a video on why privilege is a fucking stupid concept that makes people see others differently in a bad light,

thenewavengers:

But I fear it would go viral and I cannot be bothered to repeat the same point over and over again.

To sum up my point:

The MINUTE you stop thinking about privilege and what sets us apart, you will start thinking about what sets us together. If you think every day about what defines everyone differently, then you will never see people equally.

The privilege belief sets people apart on what people are fundamentally. I know I didn’t ask to be a white male heterosexual, and I know that everyone on the planet didn’t ask their mother in the womb: “Excuse me, can I be this this and this” so who are you to judge me on what I am or what I’m not?

Do you think that I’m incapable of understanding a point because I’m white?
Do you think a point you make in a debate will be backwards to me because I’m male?
Do you think I could never comprehend something because I like women?

Thinking anyone is a certain something, and therefore they cannot do something is not only patronizing, but it’s demoralizing and a negative attitude that reinforces segregation and divides between ALL people.

Stop talking about how different we are, and start thinking that we are ALL human. We are ALL the same, in many many ways, more ways than you can think we’re not.

So take the negative “we’re so different” and replace it with a positive “you’re not so different to me, let’s share a cookie.”

I can’t believe I’m having to type this, really. I mean is it that hard to love your fellow man because of who they are? Why would you look down on someone because they’re a certain something?

I know this post will be reblogged, and maybe a reaction gif added or some shit, but I will stick by my point.

I will NEVER say: “Well, you’re a LGBT coloured woman, and thus you have no grounds in my discussion” EVER. Because that woman never asked to be that, she didn’t CHOOSE, she didn’t sit down and THINK about who she’s going to be, she is who she is, and thus, I will not judge.

So fuck you for judging, and fuck you for making walls where there never should be, and fuck you for trying to push that on others. It’s irritating and not needed.

Ceri, help me out, hun. I'm getting it left and right from people who think privilege is a tangible thing and cannot see how it would create segregation through underlying everyone's weaknesses.

I need to read all of that. Ugh. Gimme 10 minutes.

One time I was walking through town and some guy was preaching and was all "IT IS JUDGEMENT DAAYY!!" I shouted back "Nah, mate. It's Tuesday." I got a few laughs... =P

Haha, genius!

So, yes I guess I should have looked up where Cardiff actually is instead of assuming that it was in London just because Mark Gatiss mentioned that that was where they would be filming for Sherlock. I had my moment of ignorance and idiocy. Thank you Unemployed Philosopher for being so discrete about it.

London is just one city. Everybody in the world thinks that “London” means “England” and “England” meaks “UK”. The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Due to the fact that the English raped and pillaged their way through the other respective countries, their inhabitants strongly dislike being called ‘English’. Many don’t even like ‘British’. As a Welsh person from a country with a history of hundreds of years of persecution by the English, I take great offense to being mistaken for English. That’s like calling a Canadian an American.
